The Parable of The Talents Made Simple

(Matthew 25:14-30)

The Parable of the Talents is found in Matthew 25. We all know the story. If you’ve sat in church, you’ve heard about the man who traveled to a far country and left his servants with some money. He gave one person five talents. Then he gave another two talents and another person one talent. In those days, a talent was substantial.

As the story goes, when he got back, the one that he has given five talents to had made another five. So this person gave his Master ten talents back. The one who had been given two had made another two talents and gave the Master four talents back.

The one who had been given one talent replied with an excuse to his Master. The scripture records “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you’ve not sown, and gathering where you’ve not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there is what is yours.’

“But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed.  So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he that have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.  And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There’ll be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” (Matt. 25:24-30)

Now, this is about a man who went to a far country. Well, Jesus has gone away to a far place and people who give their lives to Him would be called his servants. And so Jesus is illustrating, He’s gone away to heaven. This Master in the parable gave the talents to each person, each according to their ability.

Let us look at this ability. There are some people who were born to rich families, had good education, had the world at their feet and were blessed with good brains. They’ve got no problems with money, gone to the best universities, had the best encouragement, had people around them who gave them love and were born with good abilities. They are the sort of persons that were given five talents.

Not many people who came from poor families end up ruling a state or a country. People from pretty privileged background seem to make their way into politics and leadership. So when the Lord was distributing the five talents, he’s distributing them - the five, the two and the one - each according to the recipient’s ability.

So take comfort in knowing that the Lord knows your ability. He’s not gonna ask for something that’s too hard for you. He’s not gonna ask for something that you can’t do. You’re not gonna be the servant; there’s no way you gonna be the servant that’s just been given one talent and you’ve squandered the talent by burying it.

There’s no way that can happen to you. It can’t happen by mistake. It is a deliberate action by a person who’s been given one talent. We’re all given natural talents and abilities and God wants us to use those abilities for the betterment of the Kingdom of God. Now, there are many people who don’t know what their talents are and that takes a bit of research. Generally, the talents are found in what you can do well. But sometimes we need to identify what our spiritual gifts are. That’s where a spiritual gifts test that you can find in Google is very helpful for you to work out what your spiritual gifts are and you can move in them.

There’s nothing more fulfilling and exciting than knowing what your spiritual gifts are and walking in them. An example of someone who’s been given five talents and bringing back the Lord five more is Benny Hinn or Kenneth Copeland or Joyce Meyer. These people have been promoted by the Lord and given much authority in his Kingdom to do great works. And they are using their talents to the best of their abilities.

Someone who’s been given two talents may be one who’s pastoring a church or speaking at conferences or going from church to church as a guest speaker whilst shepherding and preaching in their own church.

And a person who is given one talent may just be like you and I; just the ordinary Christian. I’ve just got a simple camera, a cheap $500 camera and I sit down and make You Tube videos. I sit down on an inexpensive computer and write articles and put them on the internet. Thousands of people watch these videos and read these articles each month. Doing that is just using my one little talent yet I’m duplicating it.

I don’t like to think that any servant of God can be found squandering their talent. I don’t like to think that any believer in Jesus Christ would be cast into the outer darkness. This isn’t something that I seem to want to even consider. And this is one of the reasons for this teaching. I encourage you to do a spiritual gifts test and look up what your spiritual gifts are and work them out. As I’ve said, there’s nothing more exciting than walking in these spiritual gifts.

Now, I’ve got the gift of teaching; I’ve got the gift of prophecy, the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom which are all prophetic gifts. I’ve got the gift of encouragement and evangelism and I use all those gifts.

Then there are the ministry offices. I’m pretty good as an evangelist, I’m pretty good as a prophet and I’m pretty good as a teacher. And it’s very fulfilling being able to walk and practice what the Lord has called you to do.

Now everyone’s got a destiny and a purpose that God’s got for you. You need to find out what it is. Most often your destiny can be found in what you want to do, your dreams, your desires, your biggest ambitions. They’re often your destiny and you need to make small steps and work towards it.

For many years, I’ve wanted to preach. I had a friend who bought a camera and we started to preach a little bit and then he sold the camera at a Pawn Broker so we couldn’t preach anymore. That upset me but it had planted a seed and desire in me.

A couple of years later our government gave us some money due to the downturn, from which I bought myself a camera and I’ve started to make videos on YouTube. If you try to search You Tube under my full name, I’ve got a few hundred videos. This is walking in a destiny. I hope in the future to not just be preaching to people on the internet but I hope to be preaching to audiences and in churches; but we have to take each thing step by step. We can move slowly into our destiny or quite fast, it all depends on the Lord and His wisdom.

You can be doing steps and equipping yourself and becoming more proficient at individual parts of your destiny before you move in the whole thing. So I encourage you, get to know your spiritual gifts. Get to know your dream and your destiny and start towards it… May you be blessed.

For many years, God has been using me to give people personal prophecies. For four years now, I have operated a web site offering free personal prophecy helped by a team of ten prophetic people. During this time I have made thousands of prophecies, and you could say that I cut my prophetic teeth on those virtual pages. I have recently given away that free personal prophecy web site, but I am still available to offer a prophecy to any person who is willing to make a donation to help disburse the expenses of my continuing ministry. Please feel free to go to my video page to see for yourself the quality of my prophetic words over important people in ministry and regular Christians, as well as read the feedback I have received. When you feel satisfied that you would like a video prophecy for yourself, trust the Lord to guide you as to how much you are willing to donate to my ministry, then press the Paypal button below to fill out your details. Please note there is a section where not only can you write your details but also ask any specific questions you might have for the Lord. I sincerely look forward to ministering to you personally
