The Parable of The Landowner Made Simple

(Matthew 21:33-46)

Matthew 21:33-46 reads:
33 “Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. 34 Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. 35And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. 37 Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”
41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the Lord’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

45 Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. 46 But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet.

I've heard this parable preached many times and each time, there's pretty well not much difference. This is a story. This is a prophecy of Jesus and the New Covenant. Many times the prophets came to the nation of Israel to correct them for their sins. They brought in the word of correction from the Lord for the people to turn around. The Israelites beat and killed the prophets. Then finally Jesus said in His parable about the landowner, which is God, who sent His son. The vinedressers killed the son so that they could take inheritance. The Pharisees did not realize that Jesus was talking about them; it says straight after that they tried to seize him.
So the parable was like saying, “I know you want to kill me. I know that this prophecy in the Old Testament is talking about me and you will reject me, and you will try to kill me, but I'm going to win in the end.” Now, essentially, this has to take half an hour to unpack. But I am one person who likes the modern-day application of the scripture to my life. So, what has this parable got to do with me?
I have a prophetic calling, but I prefer the gifts of teaching and evangelism. I believe that correction can be brought on people through great teaching. Bringing correction is not my favorite occupation in the world, but it needs to be done. There is always a need for correction. And if something is going off track, someone has to come around with the truth. Someone needs to steer people back and most times, God uses a prophet to be his mouthpiece of correction.
Apostle Paul said that the scriptures are useful for teaching and rebuke. There are people who hear from God, who are anointed by God, who have clear words for the church but they are shunned. You know how I always mention Andrew Wommack. He has to hold his meetings in public halls. He can't hold them in the church because the churches won't have him. He teaches such a profound revelation of the grace of God. It just goes against all the legalistic doctrines that is why he is rejected by many main stream churches.
Now, the best place for Andrew isn't a public hall, inviting in whoever would come and see him. The best place for him should have been those churches, but they won't have him. They don't want to hear the truth. The Bible says the truth will set you free. But hearing the truth can sometimes hurt.
I'm overweight because I eat the wrong foods and I don't exercise enough. I'm lazy. If I disciplined myself, I could eat better foods and start to exercise. Sure, there is another reason why I'm overweight; because I take a certain medication which causes weight gain. But I could still lose weight by exercising and changing my diet. We can stay in our excuses, but if we apply the truth, we can make a positive change.
There are certain individuals who are in touch with God. They hear from God and come along side the Pastor and the church. They suggest certain things for God’s people. Some of them are called to be prophets. They are given wisdom. Sometimes others think that they are crazy because they are talking about some things that are opposite to what the church is doing. If the Pastor takes the correction, he will change the direction of the church. And that's what bringing correction is, it's turning people in an opposite direction.
The book of Jeremiah talks about his calling as a prophet.
Jeremiah 1: 9-10
“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”
Sometimes a prophet has to destroy something absolutely, pull all the foundations out from within and rebuild something. Often, that's the only way it can be fixed. And Andrew Wommack isn't welcome in their churches to do it. He's just going to build a TV ministry where people flick over on TV and see him by coincidence. And they hear him on the radio and find him on the internet. Somehow, they’ve got to find him and hear him outside of their church, get attracted to the truth he’s preaching and then when he comes to a town near them, for them to travel to that town and hear the profound teaching and the truth of the Gospel for their lives to be transformed.
Life would have been a lot easier if Andrew was allowed to go in to the churches or get them together for a conference for him to share God’s correction to His people. Andrew has a lot to share. His teachings have transformed me.
And so, this parable about people coming to the vineyard, trying to collect its fruits and then being bashed or abused or killed, this is still true today. God sends His messengers in to correct His people and many times they are shunned. Andrew is just the most loving, great, funny, peace loving person. He is not a false prophet. He is not a hard person. He is not harsh and judgmental. He just speaks the truth in love. And yet he's hated so much by so many people.
The truth really does hurt. This parable is true. It happened. Jesus prophesied His death. He talked about the Old Testament prophets. They came to correct the people in His vineyard and turn the people back to the fruit of righteousness. But the people refused to do that, beat the prophets and killed them. And then they eventually killed the son. That’s true. Two thousand years ago, it happened.

Now you might be reading this and thinking, “I know the truth. I don’t need a person to come to my church and tell me that I am wrong. We at our church know the truth.” You could be right; you may know the right doctrines and believe in the right applications of scripture. But there are many people who need to change and this parable is relevant for them today, just as it was when Jesus prophesied His own death.

For many years, God has been using me to give people personal prophecies. For four years now, I have operated a web site offering free personal prophecy helped by a team of ten prophetic people. During this time I have made thousands of prophecies, and you could say that I cut my prophetic teeth on those virtual pages. I have recently given away that free personal prophecy web site, but I am still available to offer a prophecy to any person who is willing to make a donation to help disburse the expenses of my continuing ministry. Please feel free to go to my video page to see for yourself the quality of my prophetic words over important people in ministry and regular Christians, as well as read the feedback I have received. When you feel satisfied that you would like a video prophecy for yourself, trust the Lord to guide you as to how much you are willing to donate to my ministry, then press the Paypal button below to fill out your details.
