The Parable of The Bread of Life Made Simple

John 6:31-38

First of all, I think it’s good start to get things in context. This was what happened the day before Jesus told this parable.

The day before he’d been teaching, the people got hungry and Jesus said, “Don’t send them away.” Then He asked His disciples, “What have we got?” They had a couple of loaves and some fish with which he fed 5,000 men plus the women and the children. About 12,000 to 15,000 people were fed from only a couple of fish and five loaves of bread. And then he sent the people away. He also sent his disciples away and went up unto the hill and had a bit of a cry and talked to his Father about how John the Baptist had just died.

Then He told his disciples to come back and get Him. They were on this boat when they were buffeted by the winds. So He walked out on the water. Peter, one of the disciples, said, “I hope it’s really you. Let me walk.” So Peter went for a walk on the water. Jesus got in the boat and they got to the other shore.

Then it happened…

When they got to the shore, the people said, “How did you get here?” Because they realized that Jesus didn’t get in the boat with the disciples. Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” (vv. 26-27)

Truth is, many of us today still labor for the food that perishes. A lot of people today are filling their bellies with food and internet and DVDs and MP3s and all sorts of things that pass away. We all had to have the latest mobile phone and we just spend money, then more money and more money after that. Our desire for all things new is insatiable

Jesus says, “Don’t go for things that perish and pass away but go for something everlasting which is Jesus Christ.” Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?”

Now I don’t know about you but Jesus had just walked on water. He’d helped Peter walk on water. He’d fed 12,000 to 15,000 people with two pieces of fish and some bread. Not only that, Jesus had done some mighty signs before. He fed thousands of people and healed every sick person. The day before, Jesus had done some mighty signs and wonders and yet they’re still looking for a sign.

Nothing has changed today. Some of the best gifted Evangelists in the world are constantly being asked for signs. They want a medical doctor’s proof of cancer and diseases being healed and proof that a person was officially dead and now is alive. They want all these sort of x-rays and evidences. They are not happy with a person’s testimony of healing. People today haven’t changed and still want signs.

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said, “Lord, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and all that who come to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of those who sent Me.” (vv. 32-38)

Did you hear the statement, “All you people who believe he can lose his salvation. All you people who believe that you can do certain sins as a Christian and not go to heaven.” Did you hear that statement there that Jesus said in verse 37. “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” Doesn’t that mean if you’re a Christian, you won’t be cast out by Jesus? People who say you can lose your salvation need to consider this verse.

In saying “he that comes to me shall never hunger”, Jesus is saying that one day you’re going to be hungry, the next day you’re going to be hungry, the next day you’re going to be hungry, but if you eat the true bread from heaven, you’re not going to be hungry anymore.

So how does that work out practically? How can we take this parable and apply it to our lives?

It’s very interesting. What’s this parable got to do with our life? I’ve often sat in churches and I hear them share the parables of Jesus and they don’t seem to preach them in a way that means something to me.

For 10 years, I’ve been thinking of writing a book on the parables of Jesus and I’ve been looking into these parables simply to answer other people’s questions as well as the questions I’ve always had.

When you know Jesus, when you know His heart and you heart beats with it, when you know his compassion and the way he loves, when you know his mercy, you will see that loving God and your fellowmen is the only purpose in life. When you find your purpose in doing what you were created for, when you find your joy in serving and helping other people, when your life consists of loving others, helping other people, binding up the hurts of other people, having an effect on the Evangelism of the world, saving people from eternal hell and damnation, bringing people into the Kingdom of God, only then are you satisfied in this world. Jesus has organized our spirits to hunger for Him and His will in life. When we find His will, when we are completely in union with Him and His will, then peace reigns in our heart

When what you do with your simple money and your simple time changes lives, when you have an impact on lives, when you’re living a life like that, it’s a totally fulfilling life.

People look for a new car, a new house, a new MP3, a new digital TV, a new this, a new that. When you’re buying stuff, there always a little joy as soon as you buy it. Everyone’s looking for that little burst of joy. But what sort of joy stays? What’s the sort of joy that’s like this bread of life Jesus is talking about here? Where can you find the joy that will hang around for days? What is it that you can do in this world where you don’t get spiritually hungry the next day? How can you consume this bread of life? What is Jesus talking about?

Did you know that if your money financed an Evangelist, where it is costing him on average $20 a month to save each person in Africa in campaigns, twelve lives are going to heaven because of your money each year? Did you know, you may have problems in your life but as soon as the Gospel comes into an African person, who’s steeped in the Muslim tradition or steeped in witchcraft, that transformation of their life is a joyful experience for them? It’s a total revolution in their life. And you, just giving an easy $20 a month, are their benefactor. You’re the one who has caused all these people to go to heaven. You could do a couple of hours work per week, and with that money you could be saving one person a month. Imagine that?

Imagine giving twenty dollars to a homeless man. Imagine taking a homeless person out for a steak dinner for only twenty dollars and him then never to stop thanking you for such a delight. Imagine how far twenty would go for a single mother in your church. Imagine buying twenty worth of baby formula for a single mother. There are so many things you can do when you get your eyes focused on other people; when you get your eyes focused on God. You know God owns the cattle on the thousand hills. God doesn’t need your money. But because of your love for Him and His work, you will be compelled to share towards God’s Kingdom. You need to place your love and your security in God.

Jesus spent all day each day giving of Himself. When Jesus came out to breakfast after prayer, He was always serving other people. If He wasn’t healing people and casting out demons, He was teaching them a new way of life. When He was finished speaking, the people flooded Him with questions and He gave a few more hours to answer them. Jesus was always giving, always serving, always making Himself available to all people to meet their spiritual and physical needs. So too, the bread of life can be properly accessed in a life of service and giving.

You see, whenever you’re striving for food, whenever you’re striving for a new thing after another, you never gonna be satisfied. The reason we put up with television and all the advertisements in between all the TV shows is because we love the advertisements just as much as we love the shows. We love to buy, buy, buy. We just buy, buy, buy. We’re addicted to the rush of buying. Get addicted instead to the rush of doing Kingdom business.

Many people live in this life with no real direction and purpose. Few Christians really know the purpose why they are on earth. Most people are simply living and wandering around aimlessly. One must do a study and ask God what their purpose is and find out what God has equipped them spiritually to do with their life. Only in living in your purpose can you really be fully satisfied. Only by walking in the will of God each day can we really cease from being hungry

A survey in United States found that only 10% of Christians knew what their spiritual gifts were. Out of the 10% who knew what their spiritual gifts were, only 10% of them were actually walking and using their spiritual gifts. That meant that 99% of Christians in the United States are not doing what God has called them to do. And sadly, only 1% of Christians in the USA are actually fully satisfied with life.

Find out what your spiritual gifts are. Spend your time and money in using those gifts. Do this and you will find fulfillment in your life. See, when you find your purpose for living, when you find your reason for living, when you read this book or participate and watch all the videos in this series, you’ll see what the perfect will of God is. You’ll see what Jesus was talking about. You’ll see the fundamentals of his Kingdom and how to live in them.

You know that Jesus always taught in parables and they were a way for people to search into things deeper. Have you always wondered what the bread of life is? Are you a Christian and you’re not sustained? Are you a Christian living a life where you’re sad, depressed, feeling down, feeling like the Christian life hasn’t got everything that it was cracked up to be? Are you living with self condemnation? Is your life steeped in sin? Have you got addictions? Have you got sins that you just can’t stop doing?

There’s more to the Christian life than this. There’s more to the Christian life than living a depressing life, busy spending all the time, being consumed by the lusts of the world. There is more to life than just lusting after things. You can live in the world but not be of the world. You can live in the world without a lust for what it offers. You can live a life in the perfect will of God.

Living God’s will for your life is the only place where you will cease from hungering. Find out what that will is for you. Find out your spiritual gifts and get busy using them and you will find a joy that cannot be compared to what you have now.
